How to create a CV for your first job; see tips

It is through your CV that you will introduce yourself to the employer and say why you want a certain job opening. Know what to write in this document.

Create a CV To be sent is the first step for anyone looking for job vacancies. It is the business card that will tell the employer whether an interview is worth it.. But it seems complicated to create this document if you have never worked before. In that case, what to put? And if you already have some professional experience, how do you describe them on your resume?

There are some templates available on the internet for you to download and enter your information. In all of them, the format shows you that you need to be objective and succinct when putting together your CV. Using topics to tell what your experience is or what your professional goals are is a good option. This way, you don't waste time with tiring explanations.

Another good tip when putting together your CV is to adapt it to the ad you are responding to. If you are applying for a specific position, prepare it focused on that area of activity. But if you are going to publicize it on job platforms, like LinkedIn, make it more generic. This way, different companies will be able to analyze your profile.

How to put together your CV: what to write

  • Personal data: At the beginning of the resume you will make a kind of header with personal information. You must include your full name, address with zip code, city, cell phone, phone number (if you have one) and email. Age, gender and marital status do not need to be informed;
  • Goals: If you are looking for your first job, write this down. If you are applying for a specific position or are interested in a specific area of activity, let us know what it is. Be direct and don't put several objectives together;
  • Qualifications: In this part you will say what your strengths and differences are. You can put your skills, extracurricular courses and experiences that are positive in your professional training. If you are looking for your first job, you don't need to post this topic.
  • Academic education: you will inform your last level of education. For example, if you graduated from high school, then indicate that you have completed high school. If you have a technical degree, undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications, inform them. In all cases, you must indicate the institution you studied at, the course and the year of completion;
  • Professional experience: Anyone who has worked previously must state in their CV the name of the company, length of service, job duties and tasks performed. For those looking for their first job, it is possible to mention tutoring, volunteer work and internships.
  • Complementary courses: In this part, you can list qualification or professional development courses, workshops, participation in seminars. As with the academic training part, indicate which institution taught the course, when it took place and the number of hours required for the certificate;
  • Languages: say what languages you speak. Here it is important to be honest and not lie about your fluency. If you do not speak any foreign language, inform that you only speak Portuguese. If you know another language, tell us what your level of fluency is (basic, intermediate, advanced and fluent). Tell the truth, as the employer may ask you about it in the interview;
  • Computer skills: Tell us which programs you know and your skill level in each of them. If you took a course to learn how to use some software, indicate which one it was.
  • Other information: here you can talk about other skills, such as international experiences, leadership qualities, organization and good group work, for example.

How to put together your CV: know what not to include

  • Photograph: send your photo only when the employer asks;
  • Document title: you don't need to write “curriculum vitae” or “resume” at the top of the page;
  • Personal pronouns: Don't list your experiences in the first person. Instead of saying “I published a scientific article”, just say “published a scientific article”;
  • Negative information: if you don't have knowledge in a certain area, just don't list it. If you don't have professional experience, just remove this part from your resume. It is better not to write anything than to highlight negative points;
  • Family name: you don't need to say who your parents, husband or wife and children are;
  • Personal references: contacts of people/companies that can talk about your professional profile should not be included in your resume;
  • Reference letters: It is not necessary to attach them to your CV. If the employer needs one, they will ask for it;
  • Reason for leaving previous jobs: Again, avoid highlighting negative points. You don't need to explain in your resume why you left a job;
  • Salary expectation: especially if you are looking for your first job, do not say how much you intend to earn;
  • Certificates for courses completed: you must only inform what the course was, when it took place and its workload. It is not necessary to confirm this information with the attached certificate;
  • Date and signature: The professional CV is a document that is constantly changing, so you should not indicate the date on which it was created. You also don't need to sign it, because the employer knows it's yours.

How to put together your CV: highlights

When writing your CV, it is important to first include the points you want to draw attention to. For example, if you took an extracurricular course that doesn't fit with your intended position, leave it at the end of the list. The same goes for previous experiences. Give priority to what matches the position sought and put it first on the list.

  • First job x experience: If you are looking for your first job and have no previous experience, highlight your training and qualities. Show in your CV skills such as good communication, organization, leadership instinct, language and computer skills;
  • Professional goal: You will only indicate when you are applying for a specific job or sending a resume to a specific company. Show your interest in that role or workplace, but don't say you're available. This makes it seem like you will accept any position. Talk about your willingness to face new challenges and learn. If you don't know exactly what your goals are, just don't say it;
  • Occupation area: Young apprentices and interns usually have no experience or do not yet know what their professional goals are. Therefore, it is interesting to state which area they want to work in. If you don't know what professional field you work in, just don't say so.

How to create a CV: formatting the document

Your resume is the first contact that the employer has with your professional profile, so be aware of errors in Portuguese and the formatting of the document. After entering all the information, review everything and check that there are no grammatical or agreement errors.

The font of the text (typeface used) is also something to take into consideration. Use something traditional, such as Arial or Times New Roman, size 12. Line spacing should be 1.5. For the format, use A4 size for printing and avoid exceeding two pages.

Very long CVs are tiring. Furthermore, the majority will be viewed online, via cell phones. On the screen of these devices, reading a long document is difficult. A tip for putting together your CV is to use the available templates, with the formatting ready.
